“Delicate” Steel Sculptures by Cal Lane
Cal Lane is a sculptor currently focused on creating intricate, delicate looking pieces from found industrial objects. Lane’s sculptures transform shovels, wheelbarrows, oil cans, oil drums, and other steel objects into complex, lace like, compositions.
She is intent-full in her execution as she combines two contrasting themes in each piece.
The metaphor of lace further intrigued me by its associations of hiding and exposing at the same time; like a veil to cover, or lingerie to reveal. It also introduces a kind of humor through the form of unexpected relationships. Like a Wrestler in a tutu, the absurdity of having opposing extremist stances is there for reaction and not rational understanding; the rational discussion arises in the search for how one thing defines the other by its proximity.
I have included a few examples below, but make sure that you checkout Cal Lane’s portfolio for more.
