Laura Põld

She is Thinking About the Flammable Nature of Things

Laura Põld is an Estonian artist who splits her time between Tallinn and Vienna. Her recent solo show in Riga, She is Thinking About the Flammable Nature of Things, mixes ceramics, steel and textiles to explore vulnerability and the agency of materials. Põld has long been fascinated by how different materials feel and behave; she doesn’t hide technical “mistakes” but embraces them as part of the work’s life.

Põld’s projects often weave together craft traditions, eco‑feminist themes and personal memories. In one corner you might find a pitch‑black wall piece with jagged edges and a pebble pinned to it, nodding to darker histories of witch hunts. Across the room a delicate ceramic “Boater Hat” hangs like a fossilised straw hat, its surface alive with hand‑squeezed coils. She pulls inspiration from folklore and environmental stories, making her sculptures feel both ancient and strangely futuristic.
