I have not featured a painting in a while so I was glad when Nancy sent this to me.  I love how she has captured the feeling of being at the concert.  The singer is full of life, the lighting is amazing and Nancy’s painting style sparks movement on the canvas.  The black background feels a little flat compared to the rest of the painting, but it could be that the background looks better in real life and does not translate well in a photo.  In any case, this is not something that keeps me from enjoying the work.  This is a strong painting and Nancy does a great job of bringing the singer to life.

The work was taken using garments and materials left behind after the death of a family member.  Amy captures a real sense of movement in these photos.  These really need to be seen as a part of the series so checkout her site for more.

So, after I finished yesterdays post I started adding the new icons to my design and found the were too clean for my look.  Here are the dirtier, grungy social media icons.  This is basically the same file as the previous with a grungy set of layers applied. Oh, and FYI there are 10 in the PSD, (Google). Enjoy 🙂

I know that I have some web designers that read the site, so this post is targeted toward them.  I needed some social media icons for a site that I am working on.  Everywhere I looked all I saw were glass icons. Yes I realize I have a glassy icon in the top right corner of this site, but there will be no glass on the new site (coming soon).  Needing a clean set of social media icons that were not glassy, I created these.  The link includes a .PSD download and sorry they are not all in vector.  I hope these are useful to someone. 🙂

I read about a great artist on drawn.ca over the weekend and had to include a feature here.  Miki Sato creates textures rich images with

many found surfaces and textiles creating a uniquely three dimensional and tactile piece.

The work feels influenced by Sato’s sense of illustration and has a wonderful organic feel.  Checkout the site for more great work.

I wanted to feature Banksy today since one of his other works, The Mild Mild West, was vandalized last night  (image of the vandalism below).  A group by the name Appropriate Media splattered red paint on the work last night in their protest of graffiti art work.  The group says:

We call for the appropriate and legitimate use of public and private property. We are taking matters into our own hands

We will not seek permission

We will retaliate

My problem isn’t that they hate graffiti, or even that it was painted over.  That is a known risk that graffiti artists take when creating their work.  The problem that I have with Appropriate Media is they just did the thing they are against to “prove their point.”  What activist participates in what they are fighting against?

Besides being a crazy cool, sexy piece of hardware, this work incorporates some interesting sound technology as well.

Herwig Weiser built a machine which confronts us with its technical elements in a particularly clear and alienating way. ‘Death Before Disko’ uses an online data stream from space observation and translates it into simple yet spectacular sound and light events. With the proliferation of digital technologies, users have become more and more distant from the physical hardware of their laptop or hi-fi units. ‘Death Before Disko’ aims to return to the foundations of the hardware, and shows how our relationship towards technology is more often emotional than rational.
